Young People with Disabilities

A student at Texas Tech University, Cole Hranicky gained experience as a summer intern for the residential construction company Gerber Construction. Outside of his academic pursuits, Cole Hranicky maintains membership with the Young Life organization, which encourages students nationwide to connect through meaningful discussions about Christianity and its role in young people's lives.

Committed to helping young people grow in their faith, Young Life operates throughout the country in small groups focused on specific populations such as youth in small towns, multiethnic young people, or teen moms. For teenagers with disabilities, Young Life offers the Young Life Capernaum, which caters to the unique needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Young Life Capernaum provides the chance for these young people to engage in adventures and cultivate friendship through summer camp activities and club meetings. Designed to combat the isolation that often accompanies special needs, weekly meetings invite young people with and without disabilities to connect and share the love of Jesus Christ. For more information about Young Life Capernaum or to locate a local chapter, visit www.younglife.org.

Houston’s Chapelwood Church Sponsors a School for Children

With experience serving as an intern at Gerber Construction in Houston, Texas, Cole Hranicky is working toward a BBA with an emphasis in finance at Texas Tech University. Cole Hranicky has been involved in several community service projects, such as arranging a mission trip with Chapelwood United Methodist Church. Founded in 1948, the church operates the Chapelwood School for Children, teaching children ages three months to prekindergarten. The program’s curricula include the following topics for each age level:

Infants
Making the little ones feel loved is the main goal in the infants’ classroom. They are talked to, held close, and learn Baby Signs, a system of hand gestures developed by two doctor who are also mothers. Their exposure to art and music also begins at this stage.

Toddlers
Chapelwood’s teachers work hard to keep these busy kids occupied. They are allowed to run, climb, jump and otherwise release energy. They continue to use Baby Signs to communicate and begin learning how to take care of themselves and their environment by washing their hands and putting away their belongings.

Two Year Olds
This group practices skills of increasing sophistication, such as using art materials and identifying animals by shape and color. They also work on movement skills, using the balance beam and riding toys. As they improve their social skills, they begin to learn about science, Spanish, gardening, and other domains.

Three Year Olds
Teachers help these kids with cognitive abilities, such as matching and sequencing objects and writing. As they learn numbers and letters, they also begin to attend church and continue to enjoy free play.

Pre-Kindergarten
As they prepare for advancement, pre-K children develop their decision-making to become more confident. Teachers employ the Handwriting Without Tears and Everyday Mathematics programs and show the kids how to use the library.

What to Know about Golf as a Beginner

Cole Hranicky is a student of Texas Tech University, where he aims to complete his bachelor's degree in business administration and finance with a minor in real estate. He also belongs to several organizations, one of which helped organize a Christian summit, encouraging students across the country to learn more about Christianity. Cole Hranicky also assisted in Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. He has interests in hiking, skiing, mountain biking, and golf.

The first thing you need to know as a beginner in golfing is the perfect golf club's power. Visit a good golf shop and order for a club that feels comfortable and easy to handle. Some beginners opt for the stiff flex shaft or the six iron with a regular flex club. Also, make sure that your club has enough shaft to help you get balls into the air without side spins.

The game of golf can be quite tricky, hence the need for professional guidance to navigate through the skills and patterns needed to make a successful player. It is, however, more beneficial to go to golf courses and equip yourself with the necessary tactics instead of aiming for games immediately.

During the period of your training, you'll know how to maintain a range routine. This practice involves a series of swings, both long and short, that helps determine how far a ball can go. Exercises like these will increase the speed and length of swings. Moreover, most of the shots taken would be within the confines of a fifty-yard area, hence the need to work more with wedges and putters.
